The real name of La Maison au bord de la rivière is Montmalan. It is a "lieu-dit". Montmalan is on the commune of Nabinaud.
 
Nabinaud is situated on the Charente / Dordogne border north east of Bordeaux, south of Angoulême and west of Périgueux. Unless you are feeling really adventurous, there are three reasonable ways to reach us; by plane, train or automobile. The following information should help you decide.

TRAIN

...Or sit back and take the Eurostar to Lille or Paris and then the TGV to Angoulême. This takes between 5 and 7 hours and can be made as a single booking. Angoulême railwaystation to La Maison au bord de la Rivière is a 45 minute drive and car hire are available. Chalais railwaystation to us a 20 minutes drive. Angoulême is the major train station, Eurostar connection, 2h30 away from Paris. If you get on the Eurostar to Lille or Paris and then the TGV to Angoulême (2h from Paris), it is a 5 hours journey. Can be made as a single booking.

The hamlet is located in the southern part of Charente, on the Dordogne border, near Gironde, between St Sevérin and Aubeterre Sur Dronne villages.
About 45 minutes south of Angouleme by car, 45 minutes west of Périgueux, 1.5 hour east of Bordeaux.

From Calais & Boulogne

Via Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers and Angoulême. Approx 800 km / 500 miles. Around 7.5 hrs. Tolls approx €40.

Take the A16 motorway towards Boulogne and Abbeville, then follow signs to Rouen along the A28 motorway. Leave the motorway at the Rouen exit and drive around the city following signs for Le Mans and then on to Tours. Close to Tours, take the A10 motorway for Bordeaux. Continue past Poitiers and on towards Angoulême. At junction 30, head to Angoulême along the N10. See across for details from Angoulême.

From Paris

Via Orléans, Tours, Poitiers and Angoulême.
Approx 500 km / 300 miles. Around 5 hrs. Tolls approx €30

From the Paris périphérique, (ring road) follow all signs to Bordeaux until you eventually get onto the A10 motorway. Continue south west towards Orleans and then Tours, picking up the Calais directions (above) from Tours.

From Cherbourg, Le Havre & Caen

Via Alencon, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers and Angoulême.
Cherbourg approx 630 km / 400 miles. Around 6.5 hrs. Tolls approx €20 Le Havre approx 600 km / 370 miles. Around 5.5 hrs. Tolls approx €40 Caen approx 520 km / 320 miles. Around 5.5 hrs. Tolls approx €20

Head for Alencon and then onto Le Mans and Tours, picking up the Calais directions (above) from Tours.

From St Malo

Via Rennes, Nantes, Niort, Saintes, Pons and Montmoreau Approx 500 km / 300 miles. Around 4.5 hrs. Tolls approx €10.

Head south to Rennes and then onto Nantes and Niort. From Niort, head for Saintes, picking up the A10 motorway and getting off at the Pons exit.

Pass through Pons and head for Barbezieux, passing through Archiac. In Barbezieux, follow signs to Montmoreau (approx 25km). On arrival in Montmoreau, take a left turn towards Angoulême along the D674. Just after the Champion supermarket on your right, make a right turn towards Aubeterre. From Angoulême

Approaching Angoulême, ignore signs into Angoulême and continue along the N10. Pass a leisure lake on your right with a sign warning of a speed trap. Continue on for 6km (4miles) and exit the N10 at the Libourne (and Périgueux) sign. Turn left on the roundabout and follow all Libourne signs leading onto the D674.

Pass through the villages of Petit Giget and Voeil et Giget and on towards Montmoreau (approx 30km). Arriving on the outskirts of Montmoreau and just before the ‘Carrefour’ supermarket on the left, make a left turning towards Aubeterre. Continue following directions from Montmoreau (below).

From Montmoreau

Following signs for Aubeterre, cross the railway bridge and then turn right. Continue for approx 3km taking a right hand turn towards Aubeterre, on a left hand bend. Continue through to the village of Bors de Montmoreau. Leave the village and continue through woods. Avoid a left turn to Pillac, but continue on for 500m until you see a sign for Petit Bersac. Take this left turn and carry straight on for 3km. Then Aubeterre is signposted to the right, continue through woods, until the déchetterie (re-cycling tip)on your right, then turn left until Lacroix sign (mairie of Nabinaud), then immediatly La Base d'activités Poltrot is signposted on your right hand side. Down the hill, turn right then straight on for 1 km until the oaktrees drive on your left with Montmalan sign.

By Motorail

The train travels overnight leaving you only a 2 hour drive from Brive to Longeveau. From Brive take the N89 or A89 westwards to Périgueux. From Périgueux, follow signs to Angoulême and then Ribérac along the D710 passing through Mensignac, Tocane St Apre and St Méard de Dronne. Arriving in Ribérac go straight across the roundabout following signs to Aubeterre. Continue following signs to Aubeterre passing through the villages of Faye and then Bourg-du-Bost.

Just after Bourg-du-Bost, make a right turn to Petit Bersac and after the village cross two hump backed bridges. At the T-junction, turn left for 1 mile until the sign of Nabinaud on your left. Pass by the chapel, go straight on for one more mile ahead, until the oaktrees drive on your left with Montmalan sign.

Travelling by plane or train

 From La Rochelle Airport (around 1hr, 50 mins)

From the airport head south east along the N137 towards Rochefort and the A837 towards Saintes. On the outskirts of Saintes either go along the N137 or take the A10 motorway south to Pons.

From Pons head for Barbézieux, passing through Archiac. In Barbézieux follow signs to Montmoreau. Go to Montmoreau (approx 25km) and on arrival make a left turn towards Angoulême along the D674. Just after the Champion supermarket on your right, make a right turn towards Aubeterre. For directions from Montmoreau, please see over the page.

From Poitiers Airport (around 1hr, 45 mins)

From the airport head south along the N10 towards Angoulême. For directions from Angoulême, please see over the page.

From Limoges Airport (around 1hr, 45 mins)

From the airport turn right onto the N141 following signs for Angoulême. Continue along this road passing St Junien, Chabanaix, Chasseneuil and La Rochefoucauld and onto Angoulême. From Angoulême, please see over the page.

From Bordeaux Airport (around 1hr, 20 mins)

Leave the airport and follow signs for the Rocade (ring road). Once on the ring road, follow all signs for Paris until you cross the Pont d’Aquitaine (a large suspension bridge over the river).

Next follow all signs to Libourne which take you off the ring road and onto the N89. Continue along the N89 until it becomes motorway (A89), heading for Périgueux and Clermont Ferrand. (If you prefer not to use the motorway, stay on the N89 around the outskirts of Libourne following signs for Périgueux, until you reach the village of Médard de Guizières, then follow the rest of the directions). Leave the motorway at junction 11, signed Coutras. After the toll (€2.20) turn right at the roundabout and into the village of St Médard de Guizières.

Just after the church turn left, signposted Le Fieu and La Roche Chalais which leads you onto the D21. Continue along the D21 for approx 18km until it joins the D674, where you should turn right into La Roche Chalais. Go through the village and as the road descends on a bend, turn right along the D5 to St Aulaye. In the centre of St Aulaye, turn left by the square towards Aubeterre, passing through the village of Bonnes.

On the edge of Aubeterre, turn right and around a series of bends, along the St Séverin Road. After approx 2km you pass through the village of Laprade. 1 mile after Laprade at Lacroix sign (mairie of Nabinaud), turn right then immediatly following La Base d'activités Poltrot signposted on your right hand side. Down the hill, turn right then straight on for 1 km until the oaktrees drive on your left with Montmalan sign.

From Bergerac Airport (around 1hr, 15 mins)

Leave the airport and turn right heading towards Bergerac town centre, along the N21. On the outskirts of the town, turn right in the direction of Périgueux. Continue straight for approx 3 km until you see signs on your left for Mussidan. Follow all signs for Mussidan along the D709.

In Mussidan turn right and go straight on across the river, following signs to Ribérac, still along the D709. On arrival in Ribérac town centre, turn left by the Crédit Agricole Bank and then take the second right, signposted Aubeterre. Continue following signs for Aubeterre, passing through the villages of Faye and Bourg du Bost.

Just after Bourg de Bost, make a right turn to Petit Bersac and after the village cross two hump backed bridges. At the T-junction, turn left for 1 mile until the sign of Nabinaud on your left. Pass by the chapel, go straight on for 1 more mile ahead, until the oaktrees drive on your left with Montmalan sign.

From Angoulême-Cognac Airport (around 50 minutes)

Leave the airport, turning right and continue for 1.5km. Turn left onto the D23 towards Champniers. In Champniers, turn right onto the D105. Continue for approx 1km, then take a right onto the D910. By Eurostar and TGV

From London St. Pancras to Angoulême. Take the Eurostar to either Lille or Paris. In Lille you simply change platforms and take a TGV to Bordeaux, which stops off en route in Angoulême. If you go to Paris you need to change railway stations from La Gare du Nord to La Gare Montparnasse, before getting the TGV to Angoulême.

On arrival at Angoulême, you can organise a hire car. The journey from Angoulême station to Nabinaud takes around 45 minutes.

Leave the station turning left and then right at the roundabout. Follow signs to Libourne and then Montmoreau along the D674. Pass through the villages of Petit Giget and Voeil et Giget and on towards Montmoreau (approx 30km). For directions from Montmoreau, please see over the page. 

 

 A car is needed to visit and enjoy the area. Aubeterre village is 2 miles away from us.

WIFI : being in a rural area with no ADSL network, for 20 € we offer a broadband internet connection with unlimited access up to 2 GO as long as you have a positive balance. It allows you to connect up to 5 WiFi enabled devices to the internet using the code displayed on the screen. For heavy downloadings, the internet is also accessible from Nabinaud's operator which is at 1km.
